Although it is uncertain as to when exactly the celebration of the New Year in China began, it is said to have originated in as early as 2000 BC. According to tales and legends, the ‘Year’ was a lion-headed ox that came out every New Years Eve to harm animals, people and their property, that feared the color red, fire and loud sounds. This, then brought about the tradition of people posting red crafts in front of their homes, launching fireworks, and hanging lanterns at the end and start of every year. With so much history and cultural importance, it’s no surprise that Pharrell Williams aimed to utilize his Human Race collaboration with Adidas to pay homage and respect to this annually celebrated holiday. Releasing three separate design iterations, each style pulls inspiration from the colors, shapes, and energy of CNY.
The Solar Hu Glide ST from the new Adidas x Pharrell Williams CNY collection features a runner shape, with predominantly red and gold color scheme. The midsection is then dressed with black mesh, while the toe and heel utilize a rich, creamy red. Gold branding are pressed on the tongue and the lateral heel, adding a luxurious touch, while a classic, white Boost midsole and black Continental rubber outsole add comfort and traction. The shoe is then finished off with a white “Hu” embroidered on the right toe box, while a Chinese symbol is stitched onto the left.
