For the span of about a decade from the late 70s to the late 80s, sportswear design, on and off the playing field was dominated by a fitted aesthetic, from the slim shirts and short shorts of soccer kits to the tightly zipped casual ensembles on the terraces.
But, with a new decade visible over the horizon, a new kind of culture emerged. The electronic, Acid House dance grooves at the forefront of popular music inspired a loose fit sensibility to go along with them.
Alexander Wang’s newest collection for Adidas Originals combines both the tight and loose impulses, as the renowned designer reinterprets the baggy, vivid brilliance of rave culture through a sophisticated, contemporary lens, by introducing the dynamic, functional sensibility of competitive cycling gear.
The traditional black minimalism of Alexander Wang is paired with sportswear staples and cycling spandex pieces featuring a fluorescent palette and classic three stripes branding, with the Alexander Wang flipped trefoil, along with an array of modern “alt dimension” text and graphic heavy treatments.
The collection’s footwear features updates of the AW Skate Mid and AW Run Midis and a modern twist on the classic adilette slide sandal, which is made entirely from the sole pattern of the AW Skate.
