The earlier Air Trainer 1 may have provided the first inkling of what direction things were headed in, but the Air Tech Challenge thoroughly finished the job when it came to re-imagining what a tennis shoe could or should look like.
It’s fitting that such a revolutionary shoe should was debuted by Andre Agassi, a player whose sense of style made as much of an impact in the staid world of tennis as his all-time great level skills. To have the person who actually refused to play Wimbledon for three years running because of the stifling, all-white dress code as the public face of the Air Tech Challenge was the closest real life got to one of those youth-oriented, 90s soda commericals.
Just like Andre Agassi himself, today, the Air Tech Challenge is remembered not for shock value, just for being really, really good.
