The Air Force 1 hardly needs an introduction. Before the even notion of a retro sneaker market existed, popular demand forced Nike to reproduce the then-discontinued model in the late 80s. As everyone knows, it went on to become a legendary fixture in the sneaker world.
Back in 1982, when the Air Force 1 was a debutant performance basketball sneaker, fashion was the last thing on Nike’s mind. The Air Force 1 was the first basketball model to feature air cushioning and the hype around the shoe was centered on famous athlete endorsements. Nike tapped six NBA stars to don white flight suits for the rollout campaign, in one of the more memorable visuals in Nike’s storied advertising history, to really drive home the flight concept.
Nearly a quarter century later, the aviation theme is back with full force. Nike has melded the Special Field Boot with the iconic Air Force 1, for a full, technical revamp. The classic, white Air Force 1 look is reworked for winter, as a white/tiger camouflage colorway is rendered ballistic nylon and Ibex leather.
